The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following a probe by the Western Hockey League (WHL) that revealed violations of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned from his coaching role after receiving a five-game suspension and a $10,000 fine imposed by the WHL. The league found that DeSilva had violated conduct standards during two separate on-ice incidents while handling player discipline.
In response to these findings, WHL Commissioner Dan Near emphasized the league’s commitment to accountability and maintaining clear conduct standards for all members. DeSilva’s suspension, which lasted from November 5 to November 11, was followed by his resignation on November 14, as announced by Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie. The decision was described as mutually agreed upon for the benefit of both DeSilva and the organization, with a focus on fostering a positive environment for all players.
Notably, this development comes after the Swift Current Broncos and their former head coach Devan Praught mutually parted ways two years ago due to a similar incident where Praught was suspended for violating WHL conduct standards.
Additionally, the WHL also took action against Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who was suspended and fined $10,000 for using intimidating behavior and language during a post-game address to players following a loss to Edmonton in October. Anholt expressed regret for his actions and committed to upholding higher standards in the future. His suspension will be lifted on November 26.
Both investigations into the coaches were initiated following tips received through the WHL Respect Line, a confidential reporting system for league-related concerns.
