Swimmer Summer McIntosh Withdraws from World Cup Opener

Date:

Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh has had to pull out of the first leg of the World Cup tour in Carmel, Indiana this weekend due to illness. In a statement shared on her social media, McIntosh expressed her disappointment at not being able to compete as planned but emphasized her support for the other swimmers participating in the event. She is currently focusing on recuperating after being in Carmel for the event preparations. It is uncertain whether she will be able to participate in the following stop in Westmount, Illinois. The competition will conclude at the Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto from October 23 to 25.

The World Cup tour, spanning three stops, features top swimmers from around the world, including Olympians and world champions, with a prize pool of $1.2 million up for grabs. A bonus of $10,000 is offered to any swimmer who breaks a world record during the competition. There is an additional $10,000 prize for the swimmer who achieves a clean sweep of a single event across all three tour stops.

Among the Canadian participants in the tour are Josh Liendo, Kylie Masse, Mary-Sophie Harvey, and Ilya Kharun. The international lineup includes notable swimmers like Leon Marchand, Noe Ponti, Mollie O’Callaghan, Regan Smith, Thomas Ceccon, and Kaylee McKeown. McIntosh, who recently relocated to Austin, Texas to work with renowned coach Bob Bowman, had a remarkable performance at the world aquatics championships this summer, securing four gold medals and a bronze medal, making her one of the few swimmers to achieve five individual medals at a single world championships.
