A football player from the University of Alabama at Birmingham allegedly stabbed two teammates early on Saturday morning before the team’s scheduled game against the University of South Florida, as confirmed by the university. The injured players were reported to be in stable condition by interim head coach Alex Mortensen during the post-game press conference. Despite the incident, the team proceeded with the game to pay tribute to graduating seniors in their final home match of the season. However, some players chose not to participate in light of the situation.
The university revealed that the suspected teammate involved in the stabbing was taken into custody, although the identities of the individuals were not disclosed. Daniel Mincey, an offensive lineman who joined the school in May, was arrested later in the day on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder, based on records from Jefferson County Jail. Mincey, a six-foot-four redshirt freshman from Pompano Beach, Florida, and a former University of Kentucky student, was the sole UAB player detained on that day in Birmingham.
Legal representation for Mincey was unclear, and efforts to contact family members for comments were unsuccessful. University officials refrained from confirming Mincey’s alleged involvement in the incident. Following the team’s decision to proceed with the game, they maintained their usual game-day routines while offering counseling services for players in need.
Coach Mortensen avoided divulging further specifics about the event, citing the ongoing investigation. The altercation took place at the Football Operations Building on the campus. The UAB football team suffered a defeat of 48-18 against South Florida, bringing their season record to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in the American Conference.
