“Thunderbird Farm: Indigenous Tourism Trend Grows”

Date:

Cultivating a blend of agriculture, wildlife, and tranquility characterizes the atmosphere at Thunderbird Farm, nestled in Woodville, Ont., within the Kawartha Lakes area. This Indigenous-owned establishment, led by proprietor Brooks Johnson, has observed a growing trend of travelers actively seeking out Indigenous experiences.

With the backdrop of the ongoing tariff dispute with the United States, the Canadian tourism sector is expanding, prompting a surge in interest for Indigenous tourism encounters. Industry insiders highlight a promising opportunity for growth within the Indigenous tourism sector.

At Thunderbird Farm, visitors can partake in short-term rentals, craft workshops, interactive encounters with farm animals, nature excursions, and archery activities. Future plans include introducing teepees, sweat lodges, and educating guests on traditional farming techniques. Johnson expressed enthusiasm about expanding the cultivation of Indigenous flowers for ceremonial and wedding purposes.

Indigenous Tourism Ontario emphasizes cultural authenticity as a core value, ensuring that visitors receive genuine experiences and that the benefiting enterprises are Indigenous-owned. Lisa-Marie Lavallee, operational lead at Indigenous Tourism Ontario, stresses the importance of firsthand storytelling and direct interactions with elders for a more immersive experience.

The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada announced substantial private investments to propel the sector forward. Over the next five years, the association aims to position Canada as a global leader in Indigenous tourism. Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict welcomes the heightened interest, attributing it to the concerted efforts of Indigenous communities in fostering Indigenous businesses.

Johnson asserts that while Indigenous tourism may seem novel to some, it has always been an integral part of Canadian culture. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and appreciating one’s roots before exploring other avenues.
