“Toronto Tempo’s Brondello Bets on Expansion Team Success”

Date:

The hiring of Sandy Brondello by the Toronto Tempo raised eyebrows. Brondello, a highly accomplished coach in recent WNBA history, opted to lead an expansion team despite receiving more lucrative offers from Dallas and Seattle. When asked about her decision, Brondello cited the unique situation in Toronto, emphasizing the opportunity to build a team from scratch with potentially standout players in a special city like Toronto.

A year ago, on Dec. 6, 2024, the Golden State Valkyries conducted their expansion draft, which resulted in the acquisition of Veronica Burton and led to a surprising playoff appearance. However, the current WNBA off-season is unprecedented due to the impending expiration of the collective bargaining agreement, triggering significant player movement and uncertainty, especially with the entry of two new teams, the Tempo and the Portland Fire, in 2026.

As of November, Tempo president Teresa Resch expressed uncertainty about the upcoming expansion draft rules. Despite the lack of clarity, the team remains focused on strategic planning and preparation for various scenarios. The ongoing negotiations between the league and players regarding the new CBA, set to conclude by Jan. 9, propose substantial increases in salary caps and contract values.

With avenues like free agency, the expansion draft, and the upcoming collegiate draft, the Tempo have multiple options to shape their roster. Brondello hinted at the possibility of attracting Canadian talent, including players like Kia Nurse, Bridget Carleton, and Laeticia Amihere. The team’s former player-led management structure and Brondello’s player-friendly coaching style are anticipated to aid recruitment efforts.

Toronto’s appealing attributes, such as diversity, vibrancy, and culinary scene, are factors that may attract players to the city. However, the impact of the expansion draft on team-building remains uncertain, with slim pickings expected due to limited contracted players and the simultaneous entry of two expansion teams. The Tempo’s emphasis on defensive prowess and an entertaining playing style guides their recruitment strategy, although specific player targets remain unknown amidst the current unpredictability in team construction.
