“Townsend and Siniakova Upset Dabrowski and Routliffe at WTA Finals”

Date:

In the WTA Finals on Tuesday, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner from New Zealand, Erin Routliffe, were defeated by Czech player Katerina Siniakova and American Taylor Townsend with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Despite initially leading 5-2 in the second set, the No. 3 seeds, Dabrowski and Routliffe, faced a strong comeback from Siniakova and Townsend. Townsend’s crucial return winner at 5-3 disrupted Routliffe’s attempt to serve out the set, leading to a pivotal break. Townsend then sealed the victory with a service winner in the subsequent tiebreak.

This loss marked a reversal of fortune for Dabrowski and Routliffe, who had previously defeated the same opponents in last year’s WTA Finals championship match and the recent U.S. Open final. The head-to-head record between the two teams now stands at two wins each.

In a post-match interview, Townsend acknowledged the challenge of facing the same opponents repeatedly and emphasized the strategic preparation that contributed to their win. The winning duo secured another crucial break in the first set when the score was tied at 3-3, with Townsend’s lob setting up Siniakova’s decisive volley.

Townsend’s strong serving performance, remaining unbroken throughout the match, propelled her and Siniakova to a 2-0 record in group play. Dabrowski and Routliffe, now with a 1-1 record, are set to compete against Timea Babos from Hungary and Luisa Stefani from Brazil in their final round-robin match.
