Linda Howie was deeply shaken by the distressing sight of her burning home on Monday morning. As smoke billowed out, she realized that some of her beloved animals were caught in the tragic incident.
Living near the Walter Baker Sports Centre in Barrhaven, Howie, who is known for training Shetland Sheepdogs, also ran an informal cat rescue operation from her residence. Neighbors, like Marg Sawicka and Susan Enns, observed the heartbreaking scene as firefighters tried to save the animals from the blaze.
Unfortunately, Ottawa Fire Services Chief Paul Hutt confirmed that 13 cats and two dogs, including Howie’s cherished pets Gemma and Dazzle, perished in the fire. Another puppy named Prancer succumbed to smoke inhalation later. Amidst the chaos, Howie was able to hold one of her dogs for a final moment of farewell.
Despite the tragedy, two cats and two puppies were rescued from the fire. Authorities determined that the fire was accidental and originated in the kitchen, leading to significant damage to the interior of Howie’s home.
It came to light that Howie’s cat rescue initiative, Barrhaven Animal Resources, was not officially registered with the city. While the exact status remains unconfirmed due to an ongoing investigation, Howie emphasized the quality care she provided to the animals and her long-standing commitment to fostering for the Ottawa Humane Society.
Although not formally affiliated with the Ottawa Humane Society, Howie had been a dedicated foster volunteer. Looking ahead, Howie expressed uncertainty about the future of her cat rescue efforts but affirmed her intention to continue training the surviving dogs.
As she navigates this challenging period, Howie shared, “I really have to collect my thoughts and see where I go from here.”
