Trump-backed Nasry Asfura wins Honduras presidency

Date:

Trump-backed contender Nasry Asfura emerged victorious in Honduras’ presidential election, as confirmed by electoral authorities on Wednesday. The prolonged vote count had cast doubts on the country’s electoral system. The election reflects the rightward trend in Latin America, following Chile’s recent choice of far-right figure Jose Antonio Kast as president.

Asfura, representing the conservative National Party, secured 40.27% of the vote on Nov. 30, narrowly defeating Salvador Nasralla of the centrist Liberal Party, who garnered 39.53%. Asfura, the ex-mayor of Tegucigalpa, triumphed in his second presidential bid after a close race with Nasralla.

Amid contestations and disputes over the election results, Asfura’s supporters celebrated at his campaign headquarters while electoral officials and candidates debated the outcome. Asfura expressed readiness to lead Honduras in a social media post, pledging not to disappoint the nation.

The election outcome dealt a blow to the incumbent leftist leader and her LIBRE party, with their candidate finishing a distant third with 19.19% of the vote. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura and expressed eagerness to collaborate on enhancing prosperity and security in the region.

Endorsed by Trump shortly before the election, Asfura campaigned on his successful infrastructure projects in the capital. Nasralla alleged electoral fraud and demanded a vote recount just before the official results were announced. Critics accused Trump’s endorsement of Asfura as electoral interference that swayed the election results.

The election process was marred by a slow vote count, prompting international concern and calls for a swift resolution. Despite initial challenges, the electoral authorities eventually declared Asfura as the winner, marking a significant political shift in Honduras.
