“Trump Halts Immigration from 19 Non-European Countries”

Date:

The Trump administration announced a temporary halt on all immigration applications, including those for green cards and U.S. citizenship, from 19 non-European countries. This decision, made in the name of national security and public safety, extends to individuals from the same countries affected by a partial travel ban in June. Among the countries impacted are Afghanistan and Somalia.

The official memorandum justifying this action referenced a recent attack in Washington involving an Afghan suspect targeting U.S. National Guard members. President Trump has also made disparaging remarks about Somalis, labeling them as undesirable immigrants. Despite this, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised the Somali community in Minnesota for its positive contributions.

Trump’s recent actions include revoking temporary deportation protections for Somalis in Minnesota, alleging gang-related issues without substantiating evidence. Local officials have refuted these claims, highlighting that there are 705 Somalis in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status.

The targeted countries in the immigration pause were already on U.S. restricted lists, with the memorandum singling out nations like Afghanistan, Somalia, and others. Since his return to office, Trump has intensified immigration enforcement efforts, focusing on reshaping legal immigration policies under the guise of national security concerns.

The new policy mandates a re-review process for all immigrants from the affected countries, emphasizing thorough assessments of national security risks. Recent crimes, including the attack on the National Guard, were cited as reasons for the halt. The American Immigration Lawyers Association reported disruptions in naturalization processes for individuals from these countries.
