Trump to Host Kennedy Center Honors for Stallone, Kiss, & Gaynor

Date:

Sylvester Stallone, Kiss, and Gloria Gaynor are set to be honored at the annual Kennedy Center Honors, with U.S. President Donald Trump hosting the event, marking the first time a president will lead the ceremony instead of observing from a box at the opera house. Since his return to office earlier this year, Trump has utilized the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, named after a Democratic predecessor, as a focal point in his criticism of what he perceives as “woke” anti-American culture. When asked about his preparation for the ceremony, Trump mentioned that he did not extensively prepare, relying on his memory and aiming to present his authentic self, drawing a parallel to late-night host Johnny Carson.

In August, Trump confirmed that he accepted the hosting role, mentioning at a State Department dinner for the honorees that he agreed to host “at the request of a certain television network.” Trump expressed confidence in the upcoming broadcast on CBS and Paramount+, anticipating record-breaking viewership. This marks a departure from previous traditions where figures like journalist Walter Cronkite and comedian Stephen Colbert hosted the event, with presidents typically watching alongside the honorees. Notably, Trump skipped the honors during his initial term.

The honorees, recognized for their impact on American culture and the arts, include pop culture icons like Sylvester Stallone for his iconic roles in the “Rocky” and “Rambo” franchises, Gloria Gaynor for her empowering anthem “I Will Survive,” and Kiss for their elaborate makeup, theatrical performances, and pyrotechnics. The ceremony is expected to be an emotional occasion for Kiss, particularly following the recent passing of the band’s original lead guitarist, Ace Frehley. Gene Simmons, co-founder of Kiss, mentioned that Trump assured him an empty chair would be reserved in memory of Frehley.

Reflecting on the significance of being honored at the event, Stallone described the experience as being in the “eye of a hurricane,” while Gaynor expressed feeling like she was living a dream. Michael Crawford echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the humbling nature of the recognition at this stage of his career. The Kennedy Center Honors have a rich history of celebrating artists from various disciplines, with past honorees spanning dance, theater, film, and music.

Trump’s involvement in the Kennedy Center has stirred controversy, as he reshaped the leadership and board of trustees, criticizing the venue’s programming and aesthetics. He secured substantial funding for renovations and joked about renaming it the “Trump Kennedy Center.” Throughout history, presidents have encountered honorees with differing political views, exemplified by instances like Republican Ronald Reagan honoring liberal playwright Arthur Miller and Democrat Bill Clinton celebrating conservative actor Charlton Heston.

The political dynamics surrounding the event have been notable, with honorees expressing varied views on Trump. While some like Kiss member Paul Stanley have been critical of Trump’s actions, others like George Strait and Gloria Gaynor have remained relatively quiet about their political affiliations. Simmons, who initially supported Trump, later voiced concerns about his conduct, highlighting the diverse perspectives within the honoree group. As the ceremony approaches, anticipation is high for a memorable evening celebrating the contributions of these cultural icons.
