The U.S. State Department announced on Wednesday its decision to pause the processing of immigrant visas for individuals from 75 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, and Somalia. This action is in line with a recent directive aimed at tightening regulations for potential immigrants who may rely on public assistance in the United States.
Starting January 21, immigrant visa applications from the affected countries will be temporarily halted, while non-immigrant visa applications, such as those for tourism or business purposes, will remain unaffected. It is anticipated that there will be a significant increase in demand for non-immigrant visas in light of the upcoming 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics, events that the U.S. is set to host or co-host.
The State Department, under the leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stated that the move is intended to prevent foreign nationals from burdening the American welfare system. President Donald Trump’s administration has already imposed strict restrictions on both immigrant and non-immigrant visa processing for citizens of numerous countries, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
The recent guidelines further broaden the criteria for assessing visa applicants to ensure they will not require public benefits upon entry into the U.S. Applicants are already subject to a comprehensive medical examination, screening for diseases, and disclosure of relevant personal history. The new guidelines mandate consular officials to evaluate various aspects of applicants, including age, health, financial status, education, skills, and previous use of public assistance, regardless of their country of origin.
The suspension affects a wide range of countries, including but not limited to Albania, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, Somalia, and Syria. The State Department is expected to review its immigration procedures to align with the updated guidelines in order to safeguard against the entry of individuals likely to rely on public benefits.
Overall, the Trump administration’s efforts to tighten immigration rules have garnered mixed reactions, with experts warning that the recent measures could further restrict entry into the U.S. amidst ongoing policy changes.
