A U.S. resident heading to a medical appointment in Minneapolis faced an encounter with immigration officials, resulting in her being forcibly removed from her vehicle and detained, as disclosed in a statement she made public on Thursday. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed Aliya Rahman being taken to a detention facility where she allegedly received no medical attention and eventually passed out. The Department of Homeland Security labeled her as a troublemaker impeding ICE agents during their arrests in the vicinity.
The video depicting Rahman’s arrest is part of a series of online posts showcasing an escalating immigration crackdown in the midwestern city, with federal agents making numerous arrests amidst protests against what local authorities have described as a “federal invasion.” Rahman narrated that she was en route to a regular appointment at the Traumatic Brain Injury Center when she encountered federal immigration officers. The video footage displayed agents giving orders amid a chaotic scene of whistles, car horns, and protester outcry.
In the video, an agent in a mask is seen breaking Rahman’s car window, while others remove her seatbelt and forcibly extract her from the vehicle through the driver’s side door. Multiple officers then carried her towards an ICE vehicle by her limbs. According to Alexa Van Brunt, Rahman’s lawyer and director of the MacArthur Justice Center, Rahman found herself in a distressing and bewildering situation with limited options. Van Brunt mentioned that Rahman faced a dilemma of either moving her vehicle towards ICE officers, risking harm accusations, or remaining stationary, which led to physical violence and mistreatment.
A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security refuted Rahman’s version of events, claiming that she was a provocateur who disregarded instructions to move her vehicle away from the scene. The spokesperson mentioned that Rahman was among seven individuals arrested as troublemakers, with one accused of assaulting an officer.
The video evidence of Rahman’s arrest is among several clips that have gone viral in recent days, shedding light on conflicting narratives between federal officials and civilian witnesses. The videos often depict protesters clashing with immigration officers, with scenes of officers breaking into homes, detaining individuals, and employing forceful tactics during arrests.
Rahman expressed gratitude for the medical staff who treated her injuries sustained during the ordeal, emphasizing the care and hope they provided during her distressing experience.
