Latifah Abdu and Jessica De Filippo each found the net as Vancouver Rise FC secured a 2-0 victory against Ottawa Rapid FC during Desiree Scott’s final regular-season home game. Scott, a renowned Canadian women’s national team midfielder nicknamed “The Destroyer,” will retire at the conclusion of the season after playing for Ottawa in the league’s debut season.
Before kick-off, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe proclaimed October 8 as Desiree Scott Day, with 2,906 supporters at TD Place wearing pink headbands in her honor. Scott, aged 38, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, stating, “I had hoped for a low-key celebration, but Ottawa had other plans. I am deeply thankful to the fans and the club for this tribute. It has been a privilege to be part of launching this league, especially with Ottawa Rapid – no other club could compare.”
Despite the emotional farewell, Scott’s playing days are not yet behind her. Ottawa Rapid FC will conclude their regular season away against Halifax Tides FC. The Rapids have secured a playoff berth and are currently tied for second place with Montreal and Vancouver, all boasting 36 points in the standings.
The victory was a significant one for Vancouver Rise FC, with Abdu and De Filippo securing the goals. The NSL standings show Ottawa in second place, Montreal in third due to goal difference, and Vancouver having a game in hand. All four teams, including first-place Toronto, have already secured playoff berths.
