Moncur cautioned against casting aspersions when residing in a vulnerable position.
President Trump’s recent statements regarding NATO soldiers’ contributions, particularly in Afghanistan, have stirred controversy. Trump remarked that NATO troops had not been a crucial necessity and had not actively engaged on the front lines during the conflict. These remarks sparked outrage among NATO members and veterans of the Afghan war, prompting some to share images on social media humorously portraying themselves as “doing nothing” during their service in Afghanistan.
In response to the September 11 attacks, the U.S. led an international coalition in Afghanistan in October 2001 to combat al-Qaeda and the Taliban, invoking Article 5 of the NATO treaty for support from its allies. This led to a significant deployment of over 40,000 Canadian troops, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries during the conflict.
One harrowing incident involved Moncur being wounded in a friendly fire mishap during Operation Medusa in September 2006. Trump’s comments were deemed reprehensible by Moncur, who highlighted the insensitivity of such statements from a person in a high-ranking role. Similarly, Michael Blois, a retired master corporal, expressed dismay over Trump’s lack of acknowledgment of NATO’s sacrifices and contributions in the Afghan conflict.
