Warner Music Group Partners with Udio for AI Music Platform

Date:

Warner Music Group has reached a resolution in their legal dispute over copyright infringement with AI music platform Udio and has announced a new partnership to develop an AI music platform. The two companies revealed that Udio will create a music platform for creation, listening, and discovery using generative AI trained on licensed music. The platform, set to launch in 2026, aims to offer a space for fans to collaborate with their favorite artists and produce innovative music while giving artists control and connection.

The upcoming Udio platform will enable users to craft new songs, remixes, and covers using the works of participating artists, who will receive compensation and recognition. Notable artists such as Ed Sheeran, Fleetwood Mac, Dua Lipa, and Zach Bryan are part of Warner’s roster. The financial terms of the settlement and partnership were not disclosed.

This agreement marks Udio’s second collaboration with a major music company, following a similar deal with Universal Music Group. Several AI startups have recently signed agreements with major music labels, including Klay Vision partnering with Warner, Universal, and Sony Music Entertainment. These collaborations aim to enhance music experiences for fans by leveraging AI technology while respecting the rights of artists, songwriters, and rights holders.

The partnership between Udio and Warner resembles the one between Udio and Universal Music Group, where they settled a copyright infringement lawsuit and established licensing agreements for the AI music platform. The deal with Universal led to Udio discontinuing the ability for users to download generated tracks, sparking some user backlash. While the music industry sees potential in uniting music and AI, concerns about artists’ creative control, fair compensation, and transparency in deals remain.

With AI increasingly infiltrating the music industry, the agreement between Warner and Udio signals AI’s growing presence in music creation and consumption. AI-generated music is gaining traction on streaming platforms, with AI artist Xania Monet making history by debuting on a Billboard airplay chart. However, concerns arise about the impact of AI on traditional music creation and monetization, as evident from the success of AI-generated acts like The Velvet Sundown and others on streaming platforms.
