“Wildfire Devastation Tests Resilience of Denare Beach Community”

Date:

Brittany Holmgren, a lifelong resident of Denare Beach, has faced significant challenges after a devastating wildfire swept through the northeastern Saskatchewan village in June. The 33-year-old mother lost her home and workplace in the fire, leaving her with almost nothing. Holmgren, along with her two young daughters, had to move in with her mother in Flin Flon, Manitoba, while her dogs remained in a camper in Denare Beach due to accommodation constraints.

The wildfire not only impacted Holmgren but also Jennifer Hysert, who lost her home and business in the disaster. Both women, among many others in the tight-knit community of 700 residents, are struggling to find suitable housing in the aftermath of the destruction.

The situation has been exacerbated by escalating rental prices in the area, with some landlords taking advantage of the housing crisis to increase rates. While efforts are underway to provide temporary housing solutions, such as placing trailers in Denare Beach and neighboring Creighton, residents like Holmgren are finding it difficult to navigate the limited options available.

Despite the challenges, community members, including village councillor Karen Thomson, are working towards rebuilding and supporting those affected by the wildfire. Financial support will be crucial for Denare Beach as it faces a decrease in tax and utility revenues, prompting discussions with provincial authorities for assistance.

The wildfire season, which saw significant devastation and forced evacuations across the province, has raised questions about the government’s response and preparedness. Residents like Hysert are seeking accountability for what they perceive as negligence, while local officials, including Thomson, remain hopeful and determined to overcome the adversity.

As Denare Beach continues its recovery journey, the community remains resilient and committed to rebuilding and restoring a sense of normalcy in the wake of the tragic events.
