“34,000 B.C. Public Sector Workers Move to Mediation”

Date:

The labor dispute involving 34,000 striking public sector workers in British Columbia is moving towards mediation to address the ongoing issues that have impacted service delivery. The B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) announced its willingness to engage in mediation following a request from the government. The union’s objective is to secure a fair and respectful agreement for its members, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the essential work carried out by its members daily.

Despite the mediation process, workers will continue picketing throughout the province as negotiations progress. Any potential agreement resulting from the mediation will be subject to a vote by union members, as the outcome will be non-binding. Approximately 34,000 workers are part of the bargaining unit, with around 25,000 actively participating in strike actions.

The BCGEU is advocating for a four percent annual wage increase over a two-year period. The strike, which commenced on September 2, has led to pickets at various government offices and service sites, affecting operations. Notably, the closure of B.C.’s provincial liquor distribution network has severely impacted restaurants and bars.

As tensions persist over wage disagreements for the proposed two-year deal, the union has seen an increase in members joining the strike. Service B.C. locations have been affected by pickets, causing potential delays in services. Additionally, the Professional Employees Association reported that engineers, geoscientists, and mining inspectors have joined the picket lines, albeit with essential personnel remaining on duty.

Acknowledging the impact of the strike on the public, businesses, and employees, the province expressed its commitment to achieving a fair resolution that benefits all parties involved. Premier David Eby expressed optimism for a swift resolution through the mediation process, aiming to bring an end to the prolonged labor dispute. Eby emphasized the importance of allowing the mediators space to facilitate productive discussions and reach a timely resolution.
