“Puppetry Pioneer Sid Krofft Dies at 96”

Sid Krofft, a prominent puppeteer known for creating vibrant characters on television during the 1960s and ’70s, passed away peacefully on April 10 at the residence of his friend and business partner, Kelly Killian. He was 96 years old. Together with his younger brother Marty, Sid Krofft was the creative force behind various TV shows, notably their debut series, “H.R. Pufnstuf,” which gained a dedicated following over time.

Describing the show as their “first baby,” Krofft and his brother crafted whimsical storylines featuring a young boy, a talking flute, and a six-foot dragon. His publicist, Adam Fenton, highlighted Krofft’s unwavering passion for engaging with fans until the end, emphasizing his iconic status in the industry.

Ronnie Burkett, a close friend and fellow puppeteer, recalled Krofft’s youthful spirit and dedication to his craft. Reflecting on Krofft’s career, Burkett emphasized the importance of focus and persistence in maintaining a successful and enduring creative journey.

When discussing the subversive nature of Sid and Marty Krofft’s puppetry work, Burkett pointed out the unconventional and campy elements that set their productions apart from traditional children’s entertainment. He praised the duo for infusing their shows with adult humor and eccentric characters, offering a refreshing departure from more didactic programming aimed at young audiences.

Christian Jacobs, a TV producer and musician, shared heartfelt sentiments following Marty Krofft’s passing in 2023, highlighting the brothers’ enduring commitment to bringing joy and laughter to their audiences. Jacobs emphasized the childlike enthusiasm that defined Sid Krofft’s approach to entertainment, underscoring the impact of such genuine passion in the realm of children’s programming.

Recalling a memorable encounter with Sid Krofft during a show in Los Angeles, Jacobs described the touching moment when Krofft bestowed upon him the title of “king of marionettes,” symbolizing the passing of the torch from one generation of puppeteers to the next. Jacobs expressed gratitude for the mentorship and inspiration provided by Krofft, illustrating the timeless influence of older generations on those following in their footsteps.
