The Quebec Liberal Party will start its leadership contest on January 12, 2026, following Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. The election to select his replacement is scheduled for March 14, 2026. Marc Tanguay, the Member of the National Assembly for LaFontaine, is currently the interim leader of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly. He took over after Rodriguez resigned last week due to internal party turmoil.
Recent allegations have emerged regarding illegal campaign contributions made to ensure Rodriguez’s victory in the leadership race. Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, have initiated an investigation into the alleged pay-for-vote scheme. Rodriguez denies any involvement in or knowledge of the matter.
Prospective candidates interested in joining the leadership race must apply by February 13 and gather 750 signatures from active party members. Additionally, a $30,000 deposit is required to participate. Candidates are subject to an election spending cap of $120,000, excluding the initial deposit.
