Wisconsin Judge Convicted of Obstruction in Immigration Case

Date:

A Wisconsin judge was found guilty of obstruction by a jury, accused of aiding a Mexican immigrant in evading federal authorities. The verdict, reached after six hours of deliberation, acquitted Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan on the charge of concealing an individual but left her facing a potential five-year prison sentence for obstruction.

The case stirred controversy surrounding President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, with his administration labeling Dugan as an activist judge, while Democrats argued that the prosecution was an attempt to suppress judicial resistance to the administration’s actions.

Following the verdict, Dugan and her legal team refrained from speaking to reporters, expressing disappointment with the outcome. Despite facing suspension from her position, Dugan did not testify during the trial.

U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel emphasized that the case was not politically motivated and called for a peaceful acceptance of the verdict. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche commended the outcome, asserting that no one, not even judges, is exempt from the law.

The incident revolved around Dugan’s actions when immigration authorities sought to arrest Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, who had reentered the country illegally. Allegations suggested that Dugan misled the agents by claiming their warrant was insufficient, allowing Flores-Ruiz to be escorted out through a private exit before his arrest.

Prosecutors contended that Dugan orchestrated the escape of Flores-Ruiz, with evidence including audio recordings from her courtroom. Although her defense argued that she followed courthouse protocols, testimonies from colleagues expressed shock at her conduct.

The trial highlighted the ongoing debate over immigration enforcement and judicial accountability, culminating in a significant legal decision that could have broader implications.
