Doreen Buhler’s Remarkable Legacy Lives On

Date:

Prior to her passing at the age of 96, Doreen Edna Buhler led a challenging yet extraordinary life. Following her father’s death, she departed from the farm where she was born in Calahoo, Alta., and established a new life in Edmonton, working alongside her spouse at his family’s diner. Widowed at 39, Buhler drew strength from her faith and supported her 13 children by working as a baker, pastry chef, and cook in various kitchens across the city.

However, Buhler’s story did not conclude with her demise. In accordance with her final wishes, she generously donated her body to the University of Alberta’s Anatomical Gifts Program, allowing future medical professionals to learn from the vessel that had carried her through life.

Brigid Burton, reflecting on her mother’s life during a commemorative service for anatomical donors at the University of Alberta, described Buhler as “incredible” and emphasized that she had an entire untold chapter.

‘A remarkable gift’

Annually, students and faculty gather on campus to pay tribute to those who have bequeathed their bodies to the program. The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry held its annual memorial on Saturday, attracting hundreds of attendees to a campus lecture hall.

The event featured the reading of donor names, a moment of silence, and the presentation of fresh-cut yellow roses to families in attendance.

Dr. David Williams, chair of the surgery department, expressed gratitude to donor families for honoring their loved ones’ wishes and contributing to the education of numerous U of A medical students each year.

“The human body serves as a profound teacher,” Dr. Williams remarked during the service. “A truly remarkable gift.”

Anatomical donations play a pivotal role in various health and research programs on campus, including medicine, dentistry, kinesiology, physical therapy, and physical education.

For Burton and her brother Anthony Buhler, the memorial brought a sense of closure.

Before her death on April 29, 2024, Doreen Edna Buhler had long informed her children of her intent to donate, as revealed by the siblings in an interview with CBC News.

Anthony Buhler described her donation as the final chapter of a remarkable life. Buhler met her husband Patrick while working at his family’s diner on Jasper Avenue and raised their children in an apartment above the diner.

Following Patrick’s sudden passing in 1967, she continued her culinary journey, working as the head cook at St. Vincent’s Convent and later in the kitchens of the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Burton viewed her mother as a resilient woman of faith and interpreted her act of donation as an extension of the generosity and selflessness that defined her mother’s life.

With the completion of her donation, they plan to inter her ashes next to her husband, marking the final closure of this chapter.

“This brings about a sense of finality. However, it also signifies two years of an incredible legacy,” stated Burton.
