A new study aims to aid female hockey players in maximizing their performance by exploring the sweat patterns of athletes in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).
Conducted by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, the research will involve around 100 PWHL players, representing all four Canadian teams, to analyze their sweat levels and salt concentrations during practices and games.
Dr. Lawrence Spriet, an exercise physiologist leading the study, highlighted the significance of understanding individual hydration needs for players to optimize their performance on the ice.
According to Spriet, just as athletes ensure their equipment is in top condition, knowing one’s hydration and nutrition requirements is equally essential for peak performance.
Montreal Victoire forward Marie-Philip Poulin shared the benefits of previous sweat tests she underwent, emphasizing the importance of personalized hydration strategies in enhancing player readiness and performance.

Players will be weighed before and after practices and games to determine their sweat rate based on body mass. Even a small loss of body mass due to sweat can impact an athlete’s performance, affecting muscle function and cognitive abilities, noted Spriet.
Fluid intake is crucial for athletes, but understanding the composition of sweat helps teams tailor hydration plans to replenish lost fluids and salts during games or practices.
Furthermore, the study results will contribute to a broader research initiative by the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, aiming to build a comprehensive database on hydration needs and experiences of elite female athletes across various sports.
Jayna Hefford, PWHL’s executive vice-president of hockey operations, emphasized the significance of gender-specific research in optimizing female athletes’ performance, highlighting the commitment of organizations like Gatorade in supporting and advancing women in sports.
As women’s sports continue to gain popularity, with new teams joining leagues like the PWHL, research tailored to female athletes is crucial for enhancing performance and supporting the growth of women’s sports.

With the continuous growth and interest in women’s sports, advancements in research tailored to female athletes are essential for maximizing performance and supporting the development of women in professional sports.
