“Southern California Braces for Strong Storm System, Risk of Flooding and Mudslides”

Date:

Southern California is preparing for another strong storm system on Thursday that could lead to further flooding and mudslides following heavy rain and strong winds that caused two fatalities. Forecasters are predicting one of the wettest Christmases in years for the region, posing an increased risk of debris flows in areas previously ravaged by wildfires. The burn scar zones, stripped of vegetation by the fires, are less equipped to absorb water.

Tragic incidents occurred on Wednesday, with a falling tree claiming the life of a San Diego man and a Sacramento sheriff’s deputy perishing in a weather-related crash. San Bernardino County firefighters rescued individuals trapped in vehicles as mud and debris cascaded down a road in Wrightwood, a mountain town in the San Gabriel Mountains. The exact number of rescues is currently unknown, and the area is under a shelter-in-place order with an evacuation order issued for Lytle Creek.

Residents like Travis Guenther found themselves cut off in Lytle Creek due to a washed-out bridge, with neighbors taking refuge at a community center or hotels. The community, with about 280 residents, came together to support each other, ensuring supplies and assistance were available, including medical aid from two local nurses.

Wrightwood, impacted by a 2024 wildfire, suffered from a lack of tree coverage, leaving residents like Dillan Brown and his family stranded in a rented cabin with limited supplies. However, a call for help on social media prompted neighbors to provide essential items, demonstrating the community’s resilience and solidarity.

Evacuations were ordered in burn scar zones from the Airport Fire in Orange County, while coastal areas like Malibu were under a flood watch. Southern California faced road closures and flood advisories, with parts of Interstate 5 affected by flooding. The storms, fueled by atmospheric rivers carrying tropical moisture, have brought unprecedented rainfall, significantly exceeding the region’s typical precipitation levels for this time of year.

Higher elevations experienced heavy snow and gusts, leading to hazardous travel conditions and an elevated risk of avalanches around Lake Tahoe. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in six counties to facilitate state assistance in managing the storm impacts. Emergency resources and first responders were deployed to coastal and Southern California counties, with the California National Guard on standby.

The California Highway Patrol reported a fatal crash involving a Sacramento sheriff’s deputy, highlighting the dangerous road conditions caused by the inclement weather. James Caravallo, a veteran officer, lost his life in an accident attributed to wet road conditions and excessive speed.
