The annual gathering of a vast number of garter snakes in Manitoba’s Narcisse region is currently taking place, albeit later than usual due to the cooler spring temperatures. Typically occurring in late April, the emergence of tens of thousands of snakes from their winter dens in the Interlake region signals the start of the mating season.
According to retired biologist Doug Collicutt, male snakes emerge first to await the females, forming mating balls as they vie for a chance to mate. Visitors have the opportunity to witness this natural spectacle with the snakes congregating in large numbers.
Factors such as ground temperature and rainfall play a crucial role in the snakes’ emergence. Lack of rainfall delays the process, as moisture is needed to warm the dens and encourage the snakes to come out.
Despite the weather conditions, visitors have been exploring the trail connecting the dens, with one young observer counting 59 snakes. Families like Liam Warren’s have made the trip to witness the event, with his mother, Veronique Simard, expressing her delight at finally experiencing the snake dens after hearing about them for years.
The emergence of the garter snakes lasts about a month before they disperse to their summer feeding grounds, where they consume various prey such as leeches, insects, and occasionally young birds. The snakes will return to their dens around early September as the fall weather sets in.
Raelene Sawatzky-Dyck, a snake interpreter, explained that the snakes travel considerable distances for food, covering up to 30 kilometers from their dens. Despite the large numbers of snakes present during the mating season, visitors like Aiden Schmidt, 10, find the experience fascinating rather than frightening, appreciating the unique appearance of the creatures.
