“Canadian Women’s Para Hockey Eyes Paralympic Inclusion”

Date:

The upcoming 2026 Paralympics Games in Milano-Cortina are rapidly approaching, creating a wave of anticipation among fans and athletes. With over 100 days left, Para athletes from various countries are gearing up to showcase their skills on the global stage.

Team Canada is brimming with talent across different disciplines like wheelchair curling and Para nordic skiing, with expectations of securing medals in a significant portion of the 79 events. However, one notable absence is the representation of Canadian athletes in women’s Para hockey (WPH). Despite the abundance of talent in Para hockey, the women’s category is currently not included in the Paralympics program.

The absence of women’s Para hockey in the Paralympics raises questions about the reasons behind this exclusion. While the Canadian women’s team continues to demonstrate dedication and ambition, they face challenges such as inadequate funding from Hockey Canada, the governing body of the sport in Canada.

In a recent development, the inaugural women’s world Para hockey championships held in Slovakia garnered significant attention, with sold-out games and the participation of national teams from various countries. Canada faced a tough defeat in the final against a formidable American team.

Women’s Para hockey organizations are striving for inclusion in the 2030 Paralympics, with the recent world championships serving as a stepping stone towards this goal. Notably, Raphaëlle Tousignant, a key player in the Canadian team, made history by becoming the first Canadian woman to compete in the men’s Para hockey team.

Despite facing challenges like funding disparities and bureaucratic hurdles, the Canadian women’s Para hockey team remains resilient and determined to break barriers in the sport. Advocates emphasize the importance of fully supporting women’s Para hockey to ensure their representation and success at future Paralympic events.

As efforts continue to promote inclusivity and support for women’s Para hockey, the team’s perseverance and commitment reflect the essence of Canadian sportsmanship and unity. It is time to rally behind these athletes and provide them with the resources they need to excel on the international stage.
