Mark Carney, the Prime Minister, has arrived in Switzerland on Monday to participate in the World Economic Forum held in the ski resort town of Davos. His aim is to attract investments from various countries and corporations. The forum reunites Carney with influential individuals he has encountered in his previous roles as a central banker and United Nations envoy.
According to Stewart Prest, a political scientist at the University of British Columbia, the event is a gathering of globally influential elites from diverse backgrounds and representing capital worldwide. This summit includes leading policymakers and may have a celebrity element.
Prest highlighted that this meeting occurs during a time of populist discontent with politics. However, due to President Donald Trump’s global trade disputes and sovereignty threats, Carney attending Davos currently poses less political risk.
Despite the suspicion surrounding global wealth and power, Prest emphasized the need for Canada to seek allies during these challenging times. The attendance of prominent figures like Carney at Davos is crucial for the country.
The Conservative Leader, Pierre Poilievre, has criticized the “globalist Davos elites” and vowed to prohibit any cabinet under his leadership from participating in the WEF activities, citing various conspiracy theories surrounding the organization.
Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper attended Davos in the past and utilized the platform to communicate Canada’s stance during global crises. Prest noted that Harper leveraged Canada’s significant role in the world back then, similar to Carney’s current engagement at Davos.
Carney’s Upcoming Speeches
Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also attended Davos previously, but Prest suggested that Carney’s expertise and understanding of macroeconomics give him a unique advantage at the summit. Carney is scheduled to deliver speeches on Tuesday and Wednesday to attract investments to Canada before heading back to Ottawa.
Amid Trump’s looming speech at Davos, Carney is expected to depart Switzerland on Wednesday. Prest expressed concerns about Trump’s unpredictability potentially disrupting the event and altering global dynamics.
Prest emphasized the importance of countries safeguarding their sovereignty and promoting their prosperity amidst the shifting global landscape.
