Chrystia Freeland Resigns as MP, Joins Zelenskyy Advisory

Date:

Former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland has announced her resignation as a member of Parliament, signaling the conclusion of an era for the party. The prominent MP disclosed on Monday that she will be taking on a voluntary advisory role with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and will be departing from Canadian politics in the upcoming weeks.

In a social media post just two days later, Freeland confirmed that she will be vacating her seat effective Friday. She expressed her commitment to supporting and contributing to Canada’s growth while advocating for the people of Ukraine, a cause she has been dedicated to her entire life.

As someone with Ukrainian heritage, Freeland served as deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 and was the first female finance minister in Canada’s history. She has been a vocal critic of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Representing the University-Rosedale district in downtown Toronto since 2015, Freeland had previously won a different riding in 2013.

The Conservative Party has called for Freeland’s immediate resignation, expressing concerns about her acceptance of a role advising a foreign government while still serving as an MP. The party’s ethics critic, Michael Barrett, questioned the potential conflict of interest and raised doubts about whose interests would take precedence.

While the Conflict of Interest Act in Canada prohibits public office holders from engaging in various activities, such as outside employment and paid consulting, it does not specifically address advising a foreign government. Freeland stated that she sought guidance from the federal ethics commissioner and followed his recommendations.

Initially planning to resign before assuming the role with Zelenskyy, Freeland’s appointment was accelerated by the Ukrainian side. Zelenskyy had proposed the position during a visit on Dec. 22, and Freeland informed Prime Minister Mark Carney about it on Dec. 24. Carney had previously appointed her as Canada’s special representative for Ukraine’s reconstruction, a position she is relinquishing.

Following her resignation, a byelection will be triggered for the Toronto seat, which is considered a secure stronghold for the Liberals. Freeland has been a prominent figure in the Liberal Party since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election victory in 2015. She played a crucial role in renegotiating the North American trade agreement and managing the country’s finances during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her departure from Trudeau’s cabinet in late 2024 set the stage for his own resignation.

Freeland’s office has confirmed her upcoming move to the United Kingdom to assume the role of CEO at the Rhodes Trust educational charity, starting on July 1.
