“PWHL Community Unites Behind Coach Battling Cancer”

Date:

The recent showdown between the 2025 Walter Cup finalists saw hockey take a backseat as the Professional Women’s Hockey League community rallied behind Ottawa Charge’s head coach, Carla MacLeod, in her battle against breast cancer. Minnesota Frost captain Kendall Coyne Schofield expressed unwavering support for MacLeod, emphasizing the collective backing she received from the league.

Coyne Schofield’s impressive performance, marked by her first PWHL hat trick, led the Frost to a commanding 5-1 victory over the Charge, renewing their rivalry since Minnesota’s triumph in the Walter Cup. Despite the competitive spirit on the ice, the primary focus remained on MacLeod’s health and well-being.

MacLeod’s public disclosure of her breast cancer diagnosis garnered widespread support, with the TD Place Arena adorned in pink to symbolize solidarity with her. While MacLeod was absent, the crowd’s heartfelt tribute and the players’ dedication showcased a united front in her honor.

As assistant coach Haley Irwin stepped into the role of acting bench boss in MacLeod’s absence, the Frost dominated early on with three quick goals, setting the tone for the game. Ottawa Charge struggled to match their opponent’s intensity but showed resilience in the later stages, highlighted by rookie Rory Guilday’s milestone PWHL goal.

Looking ahead, the Charge face a challenging road trip, starting with a game against the Toronto Sceptres. Despite the outcome on the ice, the support and camaraderie within the PWHL community remain unwavering, underscoring the league’s solidarity in times of adversity.
