“Crane Collapse on Thai High-Speed Rail Kills 32”

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded in northeastern Thailand as a construction crane toppled onto a moving passenger train, leading to a derailment that resulted in the loss of at least 32 lives and left many others injured. The catastrophe occurred on a section of a significant high-speed rail initiative designed to eventually link China with various parts of Southeast Asia.

The crane, utilized in the construction of an elevated railway section, collapsed while the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Images captured by Thai media revealed billows of smoke rising above the site, with construction machinery dangling amidst concrete support structures.

Rescue operations showed rescue workers atop overturned train carriages, some displaying significant damage, and fragments of the fallen crane strewn along the track. Medical personnel attended to wounded passengers at the scene.

Reports indicated that the train comprised three carriages, with the latter two bearing the brunt of the destruction. Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan confirmed that 195 individuals were onboard and vowed to initiate a thorough investigation.

The collapsed elevated section is part of a joint Thai-Chinese high-speed rail venture connecting Bangkok and Nong Khai province, adjacent to Laos. This railway venture, with an estimated investment of around $23 billion Cdn, aligns with China’s expansive Belt and Road Initiative aimed at linking the nation with Southeast Asia.

This calamity echoes a previous tragedy in August 2024 when a railway tunnel collapse in Nakhon Ratchasima claimed the lives of three workers, with heavy rainfall suspected as a contributing factor to the incident.
