Ontario Education Minister Ready to Intervene in Prom Dispute

Date:

Education Minister Paul Calandra has stated that if an Ontario school board refuses to reinstate prom plans for three high schools that called off the events, he is prepared to intervene. The Durham District School Board made the decision to cancel the traditional proms at three schools citing increasing liabilities and risks associated with organizing these events.

Students expressed frustration and disappointment over not being able to partake in the celebratory tradition that many students cherish. Calandra emphasized the significance of proms as a way to commemorate achievements and milestones, urging school boards to reconsider any plans to cancel such events.

Addressing the legislature after a question period, Calandra emphasized the importance of prioritizing students and teachers in decision-making processes. He called for allowing students to enjoy their youth and emphasized the importance of celebrating milestones safely.

The Education Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to reform board governance by placing a strong emphasis on the role of trustees. He emphasized the need for schools to prioritize students’ interests and well-being.

Calandra also mentioned a bill currently under consideration in the legislature that would grant him greater authority, potentially allowing him to intervene in school board matters, including decisions related to proms. The minister suggested that this legislation could empower him to ensure that students’ interests are put first.

The Durham District School Board has not yet responded to requests for comment on the issue. Earlier, the principals of Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools within the Durham board jointly announced the cancellation of proms due to concerns surrounding liabilities and risks.

In a letter to parents, the principals assured that while proms were canceled, efforts would be made to organize inclusive and meaningful year-end activities that promote safety, dignity, and a sense of belonging among students.
