“Canada’s Housing Agency to Become Crown Corporation”

Date:

The federal government has put forth legislation to establish its housing agency as a Crown corporation, granting it the authority to acquire land and collaborate with private developers. The move underscores the government’s commitment to affordable housing as a fundamental priority. Housing Minister Gregor Robertson emphasized the importance of ensuring all Canadians have access to safe and affordable housing.

The existing Canada Lands Company will be merged into Build Canada Homes, with a focus on constructing affordable housing units. However, the legislation lacks clarity on the specific number of units the agency plans to build and other performance metrics. Experts like Andy Yan and Mike Moffatt stress the need for clear benchmarks to evaluate the agency’s success in the long run.

Questions have also been raised about the absence of targets in the legislation, with critics highlighting the importance of defining the term “affordable housing.” The Conservative Party has not indicated its stance on the bill, while NDP housing critic Jenny Kwan expressed concerns about the broad powers granted to Build Canada Homes and the lack of accountability.

Despite criticisms, the decision to transform the agency into a Crown corporation has its proponents. Mike Moffatt noted that independence could shield Build Canada Homes from political interference and ensure strategic decision-making. The government aims to attract private capital to drive affordable housing initiatives, with land acquisition identified as a pivotal aspect of the agency’s operations.
