Rocco Mastrangelo, co-owner of Cafe Diplomatico, expressed his anticipation for the match, highlighting the city’s Italian community’s fervor and hope for qualification.
Italy, ranked 12th, is set to participate in a European playoff against Wales, Northern Ireland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The winner of this playoff will meet Canada on June 12 at BMO Field in Toronto. Mastrangelo emphasized the significance of a Canada-Italy matchup for the city and the Italian Canadian population in the Greater Toronto Area, envisioning lively viewing parties and street festivities during the popular Taste of Little Italy festival.
Jordan Nunes from Danny’s Pizza Tavern echoed the enthusiasm, looking forward to the potential clash between Italy and Canada, anticipating packed bars and lively street scenes. While Mastrangelo admitted feeling torn about his allegiance in a Canada-Italy match, Nunes pledged his support for the home team. Toronto resident Nader Ibrahim, reflecting on the tournament’s impact, emphasized the unifying nature of the World Cup, bringing diverse communities together in celebration.
Canada, alongside the U.S. and Mexico, is co-hosting the 48-team World Cup, featuring 13 games in Canada, with seven to be held in Vancouver and six in Toronto. The complete tournament schedule is scheduled for release soon, promising an exciting event for soccer fans across the country.
