Macron Rejects Trump’s Tariff Threats on Europe

Date:

French President Emmanuel Macron criticized US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose steep tariffs if Europe refuses to allow the US to take over Greenland. Macron emphasized that Europe will not succumb to intimidation or bullying tactics. He stated that France and Europe will not passively accept such behavior, as it would lead to their subjugation.

Macron highlighted the importance of upholding territorial sovereignty and the rule of law in a world that he sees as increasingly disregarding established norms. He emphasized Europe’s preference for respect over bullying and the rule of law over brute force.

During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Macron wore aviator sunglasses to protect his eyes due to a burst blood vessel. This speech came after Trump threatened to impose significant tariffs on French wine and champagne and publicly disclosed private messages from Macron.

Macron condemned Trump’s threats of tariffs against European allies, including France, as an unacceptable tactic used to leverage territorial sovereignty. He described the “endless accumulation” of tariffs by Washington as fundamentally unacceptable.

In response to the escalating tensions, EU leaders are planning an emergency summit to discuss the Greenland issue. Macron has advocated for the EU to consider using its Anti-Coercion Instrument, also known as the “trade bazooka,” to limit US access to public tenders or restrict trade in services.

The strained relationship between Trump and Europe has been further exacerbated by disagreements over Greenland and France’s reluctance to join a proposed “Board of Peace” led by Trump. Macron’s firm stance on democratic principles has drawn criticism from Trump, with Macron’s allies attributing this to France’s role in leading opposition against such coercion.

Macron confirmed that he has no plans to extend his stay in Davos to meet with Trump, with whom his relationship has had its share of ups and downs. Despite the challenges, Macron’s administration continues to defend his direct engagement with Trump as part of maintaining diplomatic dialogue.

As Macron’s term in office approaches its end in mid-2027, his commitment to standing up for democratic values and resisting coercion has made France a target for criticism from the US administration.
