Former federal Liberal leader and cabinet minister Stéphane Dion strongly criticizes the growing separatist movement in Alberta and urges Premier Danielle Smith to clarify her stance and outline the potential course of action following a potential independence referendum. Dion expressed his disapproval of separatist tactics, emphasizing the need for Smith to definitively state her commitment to Alberta’s place within Canada.
During an interview on Rosemary Barton Live, Dion, who previously served as intergovernmental affairs minister and introduced the Clarity Act after the 1995 Quebec referendum, emphasized the importance of Smith’s clarity on Alberta’s status within the country. Despite Smith’s assertion that she supports “a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada,” Dion raised concerns about recent legislative changes that could facilitate Alberta separatists in pushing for a referendum.
Dion criticized the decision to lower the threshold for initiating a constitutional referendum, labeling it as irresponsible and detrimental to national unity. He called for Smith to explain the reasoning behind this move if she genuinely opposes separation. Additionally, he urged Smith to address the potential consequences of a referendum, particularly regarding negotiation leadership for Alberta.
Regarding separatism in Quebec, Dion lamented the diversion of talent and energy towards division rather than progress. He cautioned against Alberta following a similar path and highlighted the negative implications of seeking U.S. involvement in separatist discussions.
Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently called for unity in response to external threats and internal divisions, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Canada’s independence and unity. Harper’s plea for bipartisan collaboration came after a period of relative seclusion from public life, during which he focused on business ventures. Notably, Harper’s return to the political spotlight may signal a renewed role in addressing Alberta’s current challenges.
