After convincingly triumphing over the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series and securing a dramatic comeback victory against the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series, the Toronto Blue Jays have advanced to the World Series.
Facing off against the Los Angeles Dodgers, known as the Final Boss, the Blue Jays have captured the hearts of the nation with their exceptional performance this season. However, the Dodgers stand as a formidable opponent in the baseball realm.
Comparing the two teams, it’s evident that the Dodgers boast a significantly larger payroll, spending a record-breaking $350 million US in the past season, while the Blue Jays have a respectable payroll of $255 million US. Surprisingly, despite the substantial financial gap, the Dodgers spent $95 million US more than the Blue Jays but won one less regular season game.
In terms of home runs, the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani’s remarkable 55 home runs outshine the combined efforts of the Blue Jays’ George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who hit 32 and 23 home runs, respectively. However, Toronto led in batting average and on-base percentage during the regular season.
Pitching-wise, the Dodgers have displayed a stronger pitching lineup in the post-season, with three out of the top four pitchers maintaining an impressive earned run average (ERA) of under two. Notably, only Kevin Gausman from the Blue Jays surpasses Ohtani in ERA among the top pitchers.
Despite facing the Dodgers infrequently, the Blue Jays have struggled to secure wins against them, managing only one victory in a three-game series in L.A. this season and a similar outcome in a 2024 matchup.
While the Dodgers have a rich playoff history, making consistent post-season appearances since 2013 and clinching two World Series titles, the Blue Jays lack extensive playoff experience. The weight of national expectations rests on the Blue Jays, with Canada eagerly awaiting a major league championship since the Toronto Raptors’ victory in 2019.
As the Blue Jays embark on their journey in the World Series, fans hope they can defy the odds and emerge victorious against the Dodgers. Game 1 is set to kick off on Friday at 8 p.m. at Rogers Centre.
