Jordan Binnington’s Resilience Shines Amid Olympic Doubts

Date:

Jordan Binnington is well aware of the ongoing discussions about his performance. However, he remains focused on the mindset that has helped him overcome challenges in the past. Despite starting the NHL season as a top contender for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Games, both his and the St. Louis Blues’ slow start have cast doubts on his position in Canada’s Olympic lineup.

Reflecting on the situation, Binnington stated, “I’m cognizant of the situation and aim to position myself favorably for selection while trusting my experience in the league. By concentrating on managing my personal space and optimizing my performance, I believe the rest will fall into place.”

In a recent game against the Montreal Canadiens, Binnington displayed a solid performance, making 23 saves in a 4-3 victory. This win marked his seventh of the season, a bright spot in what has been a challenging season for the 32-year-old goaltender from Richmond Hill, Ontario, as he is currently recording career-low statistics.

Despite facing statistical challenges with a .875 save percentage, ranking 68th in the league, and a minus-10.86 goals-saved above average, Binnington remains focused on his development. He emphasized, “While my numbers may not be ideal, I am committed to my personal growth and daily improvement. I can only control my actions and trust that progress will follow.”

Regarding the upcoming Olympic selection, Binnington mentioned that there have been no discussions with Canada’s management team. He emphasized the importance of focusing on his current responsibilities with the St. Louis Blues, as success with the team could positively impact his Olympic prospects.

An advantage working in Binnington’s favor is his history of stepping up in crucial moments. Notably, he led the St. Louis Blues to a Stanley Cup victory in 2019, showcasing his ability to excel under pressure. His teammates and coach commend his winning mentality, mental resilience, and ability to deliver outstanding performances when needed.

Despite the team’s overall struggles early in the season, Binnington’s teammates recognize his contributions and the team’s improved defensive efforts. As the Blues aim to improve their performance, Binnington remains focused on making key saves and supporting his team’s success.

In a recent game, when faced with a late challenge from the Canadiens, Binnington demonstrated composure and made a critical save to secure the victory. Reflecting on the moment, he remarked, “I could have handled the situation differently, but it was satisfying to make that final save and celebrate with the team.”
