“PM Carney Sets Record Straight on Gordie Howe Bridge to Trump”

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney engaged in a discussion with his American counterpart on early Tuesday regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which President Donald Trump had threatened to impede. Carney clarified to Trump that Canadians funded the bridge entirely, and the Americans already held ownership shares. Carney emphasized that the Canadian government allocated roughly $4 billion for the construction of the Windsor-Detroit bridge, utilizing workers and steel from both Canada and the U.S., contrary to Trump’s erroneous claims of minimal U.S. involvement in the project.

Despite Trump’s assertion that the federal government possessed ownership of both sides of the bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is jointly owned by both Canada and Michigan, as per the Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement signed in 2012. Carney highlighted the cooperative effort between the two nations, expressing anticipation for the bridge’s opening and underscoring the significance of facilitating commerce, tourism, and travel between Canadians and Americans.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, a Canadian Crown corporation, will oversee the bridge’s operations. The International Authority, comprising an equal representation from Canada and Michigan, will supervise the bridge’s activities. Carney also mentioned discussing the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) with Trump during the conversation.

In an interview with Fox Business, Trump’s trade representative, Jamieson Greer, suggested that negotiations specific to the bridge would take place, with a potential interest from the U.S. in toll revenue sharing. Canada plans to collect toll revenue to recover its construction costs, benefiting businesses and workers on both sides of the border. Following the repayment of construction costs, Michigan stands to receive 50% of the net toll revenues.

Trump’s earlier positive remarks about the bridge contrasted with his recent threats to block its opening, prompting discussions on revenue sharing and economic benefits. The New York Times reported a meeting between Matthew Moroun of the Ambassador Bridge Company and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, preceding Trump’s actions. Former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder debunked Trump’s claims about the bridge, emphasizing the advantages of the Gordie Howe International Bridge over the aging Ambassador Bridge in enhancing commerce and economic growth.

Greer also mentioned challenges in CUSMA negotiations with Canada, highlighting issues that need addressing for the agreement’s progress. The discussions entail access for U.S. farmers to the Canadian dairy market and resolving the U.S. liquor boycott issue. Despite the tensions, Ford expressed confidence in the bridge’s completion, emphasizing its importance for the American economy and regional prosperity.
