“Iran in Crisis: Death Toll Rises Amid Internet Blackout”

Date:

Iran is currently witnessing a grim situation with a rising death toll and an internet blackout that conceals the extent of the violent crackdown on anti-government protesters. Analysts are describing this as the most severe crackdown since the establishment of the Islamic Republic almost half a century ago.

The confirmed number of protesters killed has exceeded 4,000 and is increasing, as reported by NGOs such as the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, known for providing accurate figures in previous crackdowns. Iranian state television has acknowledged over 3,000 deaths, while Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attributed the blame to the United States for the casualties.

Soran Mansournia, an Iranian activist residing in the Netherlands, collaborating with the Hiwa Foundation, revealed that around 50,000 Starlink users in Iran are sharing information despite the blackout. Reports indicate protesters being removed from hospitals and families being asked for “bullet fees” for the release of their loved ones’ bodies.

The violence sanctioned by the regime has apparently subdued the protests that commenced due to economic grievances, evolving into demands for an end to the oppressive theocracy. International reactions to the turmoil were initially overshadowed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements offering support to protesters and subsequent praise for Iran’s leadership for averting planned executions.

As the world debates the potential collapse of the international rules-based order, the Iranian regime has displayed few signs of internal fractures. However, speculations persist regarding the threat of American intervention, with the presence of the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group in the Middle East.

The future of Iran remains uncertain, with challenges including U.S.-led sanctions, corruption, and lack of engagement for economic relief. Despite the ongoing unrest, there is a mix of hope and fear within Iran, with expectations of further protests in the near future unless significant international action is taken against the regime.
