Lindsey Vonn, at 41, is feeling stronger than ever, having gained 12 pounds of muscle and fine-tuned her equipment with the help of a new coach. She recently dominated the field during the first official downhill training session of the season. Vonn is now gearing up for her Olympic racing season, set to kick off with two World Cup downhills and a super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
Speaking at a news conference, Vonn expressed her peak physical condition and lack of physical discomfort, a stark contrast to her return to skiing last season after a six-year retirement and knee surgery involving titanium implants. Despite a mixed performance last season, Vonn’s focus this summer was on building strength and regaining muscle mass, successfully adding 12 pounds through rigorous training and disciplined dieting.
Looking ahead to the Milan-Cortina Winter Games, Vonn aims to compete in three events: downhill, super-G, and the new team combined race. With an impressive track record of 43 downhill wins and 28 super-G victories, Vonn’s successes place her among the top World Cup athletes in history. In the recent downhill training session in St. Moritz, she outpaced her competitors, finishing ahead of Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and Sofia Goggia.
Vonn’s return to the World Cup circuit in St. Moritz last year marked a new chapter in her career, setting the stage for her current comeback. Supported by her new coach, Aksel Lund Svindal, a former World Cup champion, Vonn is scheduled to compete in several speed weekends leading up to the Olympics. These include events in Val d’Isere, France; Zauchensee, Austria; Tarvisio, Italy; and Crans Montana, Switzerland.
