Arviat, a small community in Nunavut situated on the western coast of Hudson Bay, has been selected as the site for the inaugural Inuit-led university in the Canadian Arctic. The official announcement of the university’s main campus location was made in Ottawa by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), the national organization representing the Inuit community.
The establishment of the first university in Inuit Nunangat, the Inuit homeland in Canada, is seen as a significant move in asserting authority in the Arctic region. According to ITK President Natan Obed, Inuit play a crucial role in Canada’s sovereignty, with knowledge and education being key components of their society’s strength. The presence of a university in Inuit Nunangat is viewed as essential for reinforcing the country’s security.
Arviat, with a population of around 3,000 residents, was chosen by ITK’s board of directors after evaluating 51 communities. Out of the eight shortlisted locations, Arviat stood out for its compelling proposal, as stated by Arviat Mayor Joe Savikataaq Jr. The community’s enthusiasm and support for hosting the university were evident through public engagement activities and consultations.
The new university, slated to open by 2030, aims to accommodate approximately 100 students and employ 80 staff members. Despite the current shortage of housing in Arviat, plans are in place to construct additional accommodations to meet the university’s needs and foster economic growth within the community.
With a focus on providing higher education closer to home, the university intends to empower young Inuit individuals to pursue academic dreams within their cultural context. This initiative is expected to eliminate the need for students from the northern regions of Inuit Nunangat to relocate south for university education, bridging the gap and offering a culturally immersive learning environment.
The funding for the university, estimated at around $200 million, includes substantial contributions from private donors, such as the Mastercard Foundation. While awaiting the federal government’s financial commitment, ITK anticipates a significant contribution to support the university project. The university’s mission extends beyond academic pursuits, aiming to nurture well-rounded individuals who can positively impact various areas of society.
