Trustee Resigns Amid Controversy Over Italy Art Trip

Date:

An Ontario school trustee, previously targeted for dismissal by the province’s education minister, has now stepped down voluntarily. Mark Watson was part of a group of four trustees from the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board who embarked on a $45,000 trip to Italy to acquire $100,000 worth of artwork for the board. This trip, which sparked controversy, is among the instances highlighted by Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra as indicative of mismanagement of public funds within certain school boards, prompting calls for governance reforms.

While three of the trustees repaid their expenses related to the trip, Calandra stated that Watson declined to reimburse his portion fully, leaving a debt of over $12,000 outstanding. To address this issue, Calandra introduced a bill on Monday specifically aimed at ousting Watson from his trustee position and preventing him from serving on any Ontario school board until 2030. In response, Calandra expressed regret that legislative action was necessary to prompt Watson to rectify the situation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to upholding accountability and integrity in the education sector.

Calandra emphasized that Watson still owes the school board money and urged him to fulfill his financial obligations. Criticizing the misuse of funds for extravagant overseas trips by disconnected school board trustees, Calandra stressed the importance of directing resources towards enhancing student success. Although Watson has not provided a comment, the board confirmed his resignation last Friday.
