Three days following one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history, uncertainties persist regarding how the perpetrator, with a known mental illness background, obtained the firearms utilized in the tragic events at two separate locations.
The serene community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was devastated on Tuesday when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar fatally shot her mother and half-brother at their residence before proceeding to the local high school. There, she took the lives of six more individuals, primarily children, and left two critically wounded before ending her own life, as stated by law enforcement authorities.
Subsequently, the police disclosed additional details about the guns involved, revealing an ongoing investigation into four firearms, with two recovered from the school and two from the residence. However, the origin of the main firearm used at the school remains unknown.
RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald indicated that the assailant employed an unregistered shotgun to carry out the initial murders at her family home, a firearm that had never been confiscated by law enforcement. Different firearms were utilized by Van Rootselaar at the school, according to McDonald.
Moreover, McDonald mentioned that the firearm believed to have caused the most significant damage at the school was never seized by the RCMP, emphasizing the imperative need to ascertain how the suspect acquired the weapon.
Initial reports from the police described one of the firearms found at the school as a modified handgun, but it was later clarified on Friday as a modified rifle, the source of which remains unidentified.
The information released by the police regarding the firearms has raised concerns about Canada’s firearm regulations, especially in light of the shooter’s mental health history.
McDonald previously disclosed that multiple police visits were made to Van Rootselaar’s residence over the years due to mental health worries, including an incident where she was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken for evaluation at a hospital.
In an interview on Thursday, McDonald explained that firearms were previously seized from the family home under the Criminal Code a couple of years ago, but were subsequently returned to the lawful owner following a successful petition.
Addressing the issue of accountability regarding the return of the firearms, Rod Giltaca, the executive director of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights, emphasized the importance of understanding the decision-making process behind the return of the weapons.
Furthermore, McDonald highlighted the significance of tracing the origin of all firearms, particularly mentioning that the shooter’s mother possessed a valid possession and acquisition license (PAL) but had no firearms registered under the license.
Regarding Canada’s “red flag” laws, anyone can seek an emergency prohibition order if they suspect an individual with firearms poses a safety risk. If approved by a judge, the firearms and license can be confiscated for up to 30 days, with the option for a longer prohibition period upon a hearing.
