Minneapolis Residents Speak Out Against Fatal Immigration Shooting

Date:

Minneapolis residents have been voicing their anger over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by federal agents during an immigration operation in the city. Some locals, including Ashley Watson, Joel Lueders, JP Pritchett, Tony Lott, and Jennifer Arnold, shared their reactions with CBC News correspondents.

Ashley Watson, a former U.S. military member, expressed pride in her country but criticized the Trump administration for not representing the American people. She highlighted the presence of Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) officers in their community, causing fear among residents. Watson displayed a U.S. flag at a vigil for Pretti to symbolize moving forward and overcoming challenges posed by ICE.

Joel Lueders, also present at the vigil, emphasized feelings of anger and sadness among the community. Holding a sign with the word “Hope,” Lueders called for a rational approach to immigration enforcement, stressing the need for a change in tactics.

JP Pritchett, the owner of Smitten Kitten, a local adult store, described their emotions as “white hot rage” due to the government’s actions. Pritchett denounced the violence and deception surrounding the shootings, expressing deep dismay over the situation.

Tony Lott, a college professor, lamented the federal government’s presence in Minneapolis, characterizing it as an occupation. He commended the community’s peaceful resistance against ICE enforcement, expressing pride in being a Minnesotan.

Jennifer Arnold, executive director of United Renters for Justice, shared her family’s candlelight vigil in honor of Pretti and other victims of ICE operations. Arnold highlighted the community’s unity in mourning losses and the ongoing struggles faced by affected families.

The residents’ sentiments reflect deep concern over the recent events in Minneapolis and a call for justice and unity in the face of immigration enforcement challenges.
