A massive blaze in the southwest region of France has produced the first documented pyrocumulonimbus cloud in the country. Pyrocumulonimbus clouds, commonly observed during extensive wildfires, were recently spotted in Canada during the Boston Bar fire in British Columbia. These unique clouds have the potential to exacerbate wildfires.
Pyrocumulonimbus clouds, also known as pyroCb clouds, are characterized as massive and cauliflower-like formations visible from distances exceeding 200 kilometers. Resembling dark, fluffy cumulonimbus thunderstorm clouds, these clouds evolve from smaller pyrocumulus clouds rising up to five kilometers in altitude. Fueled by intense wildfires, they can develop into pyroCb clouds towering over a dozen kilometers high.
The formation of pyrocumulonimbus clouds is initiated by the heat generated from wildfires, causing hot air to ascend in an updraft along with moisture, smoke, and burning embers. As the vapor and smoke rise to cooler altitudes, condensation occurs, leading to cloud formation above the smoke column. Though rare in Europe, these fire clouds are more common during North American wildfires, particularly in Canada where they are frequently observed.
Pyrocumulonimbus clouds pose significant dangers as they can exhibit thunderstorm-like behavior, producing strong winds, lightning, and creating challenging visibility conditions for firefighters. These clouds can induce violent downdrafts as the cooled air descends rapidly to the ground. Despite their intensity, pyrocumulonimbus clouds do not typically yield substantial rainfall due to the limiting effect of smoke particles on water droplet size.
Moreover, the lightning generated by these clouds can spark new fires in previously unaffected areas, intensifying the unpredictability and peril of wildfires. The dispersion of ash and smoke by pyrocumulonimbus clouds can extend over vast distances, reaching the lower stratosphere and potentially spreading globally, persisting in the atmosphere for extended periods.
In 2021, a significant pyrocumulonimbus event in British Columbia produced approximately 113,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, equivalent to around five percent of Canada’s annual lightning activity. The long-term environmental impact of these clouds underscores the critical challenges posed by wildfires and their associated phenomena.
