Actor James Van Der Beek, renowned for his role in the popular 1990s series “Dawson’s Creek,” has passed away at the age of 48. His publicist confirmed his death in a statement to CBC News. Van Der Beek revealed in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer, sharing his journey with the disease on Instagram.
A message posted on the actor’s official Instagram account announced his passing earlier in the day. The statement from his family praised his courage, faith, and grace during his final days and requested privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
Van Der Beek, who initially gained fame through “Dawson’s Creek,” also starred in films like “Varsity Blues” and appeared on TV in “CSI: Cyber.” The show, which aired from 1998 to 2003, followed a group of high school friends navigating love, friendships, and life challenges.
Notably, Van Der Beek portrayed the character Dawson Leery on the show, a teenager with aspirations of becoming a film director. “Dawson’s Creek” was known for its introspective themes and candid discussions about relationships and sexuality, resonating with a young audience.
The series catapulted Van Der Beek, along with co-stars Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams, to stardom. Despite the show’s immense success, Van Der Beek occasionally struggled to separate himself from his iconic role, later embracing self-parody in various comedic projects.
