“Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse to Illuminate North America”

Date:

A partial lunar eclipse is set to grace the skies across the country on the night of August 27-28. This event follows closely after the total solar eclipse that dazzled viewers in Iceland, Spain, and a small portion of Portugal two weeks prior. The upcoming partial lunar eclipse is expected to be a deep one, with coverage reaching 93 percent at its peak.

During lunar eclipses, the moon traverses Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra, after passing through the outer, fainter shadow called the penumbra. The penumbra phase is challenging to observe with the naked eye due to its dimness. Most regions in Canada will witness the entire eclipse duration, with Western Canada catching a glimpse of the partial eclipse as the moon rises.

Unlike solar eclipses that require protective eyewear, lunar eclipses can be viewed safely without any specialized equipment. Additionally, a lunar eclipse unfolds over several hours, unlike the brief moments of a solar eclipse.

The lunar eclipse on August 27-28 will be visible across North and South America. The celestial spectacle will commence as the moon enters Earth’s penumbra around 10 p.m. ET, with the visible phase starting at 10:33 p.m. ET on August 27 and concluding at 1:52 a.m. on August 28. The peak of the eclipse, where most of the moon appears darkened, is expected at 12:13 a.m.

Elaina Hyde, director of the Allan I. Carswell Observatory at York University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy in Toronto, highlighted the excitement surrounding the lunar eclipse, noting the plethora of astronomical events happening this month. While the eclipse may not turn completely red, it is anticipated to exhibit a reddish hue in parts of Canada.

Lunar eclipses offer a captivating sight that can be enjoyed with the naked eye, although binoculars, telescopes, or cameras with night mode can enhance the viewing experience and capture stunning images.
