In a Manhattan laboratory, forensic experts in white lab attire are diligently fulfilling a commitment made 25 years ago. They are extracting DNA from numerous human remains collected after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, aiming to match them with samples from personal items like toothbrushes and razors provided by victims’ family members. The technology for extracting DNA and the forensic investigative techniques have evolved significantly since 2001.
Mark Desire, the assistant director of forensic biology at the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, expressed the emotional impact of identifying a loved one and reuniting them with their family. Currently, 40% of the 2,753 individuals who perished at Ground Zero remain unidentified, including about 10 of the 24 Canadian victims.
Recently, the lab achieved its first identification of previously unknown remains using a breakthrough method. By combining DNA testing with genetic genealogy, which involves family tree research conducted by the New York City Police Department, a new frontier in identification has been discovered.
The lab’s efforts offer renewed hope to individuals like Monica Iken-Murphy, whose husband was a victim of the attacks. The meticulous process of excavating and preserving remains has been ongoing since 2001, with challenges such as the destructive elements present at Ground Zero.
The identification of victims involves advanced DNA extraction techniques from bone fragments. Despite the advancements, bone remains the most challenging material to extract DNA from, requiring extensive pulverization. The introduction of genetic genealogy has provided a promising avenue for identifying remains that have not matched existing reference samples.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office is urging families to provide samples to aid in making more matches. However, many families of victims whose remains were never found may choose not to know if a match is made, as it could be a traumatic experience. Each family navigates their grief differently, with some finding solace in alternative ways to honor their loved ones.
