Garrett Hawkins, a promising pitcher from Biggar, Saskatchewan, is set to join the San Diego Padres’ 40-man roster, bringing him one step closer to the major leagues. This opportunity grants him an automatic invitation to the Padres’ spring training camp in February in Phoenix, Arizona.
Hawkins, a towering 6-foot-5-inch right-hander, has had a challenging journey towards professional baseball. Raised in Biggar, he transitioned to playing in Saskatoon around the age of 14, where he showcased his talent on local teams. Jordan Draeger, the owner and head coach at Going Yard Baseball Academy in Saskatoon, noted Hawkins’ exceptional focus and meticulous approach to pitching, setting him apart from his peers.
After a disrupted college career at the University of British Columbia due to the pandemic, Hawkins caught the attention of the Padres during the MLB Draft summer league in New Jersey. Despite facing setbacks, including Tommy John surgery in 2023, Hawkins persevered through rehabilitation and made a successful return to the field, impressing the Padres with his performance.
Initially drafted as a starting pitcher, Hawkins transitioned to the bullpen upon his return. This adjustment proved fruitful as he excelled in A ball with the Fort Wayne Tincups and later in Double A with the San Antonio Missions, earning accolades as the Padres’ minor league pitcher of the year. His consistent growth and dedication led to his inclusion in the 40-man roster, offering him a chance to compete at the major league level.
As Hawkins prepares for the upcoming spring training camp, he remains focused on refining his skills and staying prepared for any opportunities that may arise. With a diverse pitching repertoire that includes a fastball reaching up to 98 mph, a slider, and ongoing work on a splitter, Hawkins is determined to make the most of his shot at the big leagues.
The road ahead may be challenging, but Hawkins is resolute in his commitment to seize every opportunity and showcase his capabilities against top-tier competition. His journey serves as a testament to perseverance and dedication in pursuit of a lifelong dream in professional baseball.
