Intriguing Tale of Wildlife Interference with Wildfire Researcher’s Study
Lucas Brehaut, a wildfire research scientist, found unexpected challenges in his study of post-fire forest regeneration in Atlantic Canada. Despite the cooler and wetter climate, forest fires are on the rise in the region due to climate change. Brehaut embarked on a project to investigate forest regrowth after a fire near Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L. in 2022 by utilizing 19 open-top chambers (OTCs) to simulate the warming effects of a changing climate. These chambers, resembling mini greenhouses, were set up around seedlings planted by his team.
However, Brehaut encountered a different kind of challenge during his research. Various animals, including caribou, moose, black bears, wolves, rabbits, and owls, took an interest in his equipment. Surveillance cameras installed to monitor snow depth revealed that these curious creatures were not only investigating but also causing damage to the research sites.
Despite facing disruptions and damages, Brehaut maintained a positive outlook, acknowledging that wildlife interference is part of conducting research in their natural habitat. He observed animals like moose and rabbits grazing inside the greenhouses, sometimes managing to explore without causing harm.
Kaitlyn Gaynor, an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, shed light on the animals’ behavior, explaining that their curiosity towards novel objects in their environment stems from their natural instincts. Bears, in particular, exhibit a keen interest in investigating potential food sources. Additionally, the presence of human scent on research equipment can attract animals, leading to further exploration and interaction.
Gaynor shared her experiences of animals disrupting research efforts in Mozambique, where baboons and hyenas showed interest in research equipment, with elephants posing the biggest challenge due to their destructive nature. She emphasized that animal interference remains a prevalent issue globally, often causing equipment loss or failure.
While wildlife interference presents unique challenges to researchers like Brehaut, it underscores the importance of coexisting with nature and respecting animals’ habitats. Despite setbacks caused by animal interactions, researchers like Brehaut continue their vital work in understanding and preserving natural ecosystems.
