“Montreal Doctors Prescribe Music for Health”

Date:

Doctors in Montreal are now prescribing music as a form of treatment. The Montreal Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with a national physicians’ organization, has initiated a program enabling doctors to prescribe complimentary tickets to orchestra performances for their patients.

This innovative approach falls under the concept of social prescribing, where healthcare providers recommend activities outside traditional medical practices that can significantly impact individuals’ well-being. This method, which includes art, nature, and community engagement, is gaining momentum in Canada for its ability to combat loneliness, enhance health outcomes, alleviate stress, and foster stronger doctor-patient relationships.

The decision to utilize music in prescriptions stemmed from the proven positive effects it has on the mind and body. Studies have shown that listening to music can release endorphins, trigger dopamine production, and lower cortisol levels, leading to reduced stress, anxiety, and improved cognitive function.

The initiative’s aim is not limited to the orchestra alone. Other forms of social prescriptions include exercise classes, community memberships, and access to nature, such as national park passes. By tailoring prescriptions to individual needs, this method aims to make various activities accessible to a broader audience, especially those from marginalized communities.

Advocates of social prescribing emphasize the importance of an intermediary, typically a community health worker, to assist patients in implementing their prescriptions effectively. The positive outcomes of social prescribing extend beyond individual health benefits, with reports indicating a significant return on investment and improved trust in the healthcare system.

Although the orchestra prescription program in Montreal is in its early stages, it has garnered interest from numerous doctors and other orchestras in different cities. The organizers plan to gather data to refine the program and eventually expand its reach, aiming to make this initiative widely available for the community’s well-being.
